That Perfect Line of Dialogue

Some lines do the work of a whole page. One sentence, and you know exactly who you are dealing with. How they see the world. What they want. What they will never do.
I call it a signature line. I mentioned it in passing during the Nemesis course and a few of you asked for examples. Fair enough. Here are three of my favorites.
Three lines, three characters
In Reacher (season four, episode one), Kevin Corrigan plays Detective Doherty, a cop who stopped caring a long time ago. He sums up his whole career in one breath: "Punch in, punch out, hope the phone doesn't ring in between. It's about the income, not the outcome." The rhyme does it. A little cynical wordplay and we don't need a backstory scene. We know him.
Bad Monkey adapts Carl Hiaasen, one of my top three beach-read authors of all time. (Some of his books are in the London library system. I know because I have taken them out my own self.) Vince Vaughn plays Yancy, who is sarcastic, overconfident, a little smarmy and a LOT charming. After a moment he was not remotely prepared for, he snaps right back to himself: "As amazing as that was, it was not all me. You were there too." Only Yancy would say that. Only Yancy would say it that way.
My favorite is from the original Star Trek, "The Corbomite Maneuver". The Enterprise is trapped. Spock sees the problem as chess, and in chess the game is over. Kirk finds another way. He bluffs. Afterwards he puts it in four words: "Not chess, Mr. Spock. Poker."
Why it works
That exchange defines Kirk. It also defines Spock. Spock sees the world in terms of chess and logic. Kirk sees it in terms of poker and brinksmanship, and Kirk wins the day. It is a line that has carried him for more than half a century.
Look at what the three lines share. They are short. They are clever. Each has a bit of wordplay. And each one could only come out of that one character's mouth. Swap them around and they die.
So go look at your own script. Does your main character have a line nobody else could say? If not, find it. If yes, send it to me. I would love to see it, along with any favorites of yours from other shows.
